About
British sculptor and former international fashion model, Helen Solly, will display a stunning collection of her handmade metal work at Deirdre Dyson’s London gallery, in celebration of Chelsea Design Quarter’s ‘Autumn Design Trail’ from 1st - 15th November 2023.
The collaborative exhibition, titled ‘Art Angles’, will feature around eight of Helen’s steel pieces alongside Deirdre’s award winning ‘Angles’ collection of luxury, bespoke hand-knotted rugs. Event updates and a taster of what will be on display in the gallery will be featured on Deirdre Dysons’ feed, instagram.com/deirdredysonrugs.
Reflecting this year’s Autumn Design Trail theme of ‘Art, Artists and Artisans’, Deirdre’s collaboration with Helen, a fine art graduate and sculptress, will celebrate their mutual love of modern art. With her high fashion background, Helen shares a unique and contemporary design aesthetic with renowned carpet designer and artist Deirdre, and the juxtaposition of soft wool and sheet metal is sure to create a dramatic display.
As Deirdre exudes her artistic flair through her colourful designs for the most stylish of interiors, Helen transforms sheet metal into flowing curves and angular forms to achieve visually impressive effects outdoors and in large-scale spaces. Often using a burnishing technique to give her metal surfaces water-like reflective qualities, Helen is skilled at creating a real sense of movement with her materials, cutting, welding and folding to make beautiful and lasting shapes. Her design process begins with a paper maquette which she then scales up to create her impressive three-dimensional sculptures.
Describing her metal craft, Helen commented, ‘Stainless steel is not the easiest material; it can sometimes take sheer blood, sweat and tears to manipulate it into the angles and shapes of my pieces! While it may look light, it’s a very heavy metal - it creates a real illusion of movement.’
‘I am delighted to host and showcase Helen’s striking hand-made sculptures for our unique ‘pop-up’ exhibition. The curated display of angular steel artwork alongside my linear ‘Angles’ carpet designs will delight interior and exterior design enthusiasts alike, a must-see destination of this year’s Autumn Design Trail’ says Deirdre Dyson.
An admirer of Helen’s work, TV presenter and interior designer Sarah Moore, commented, ‘Helen’s skill with metal work and creative flair are rare, her designs are instantly recognisable for the spectacular impact they create.’
Stephanie Cushing, curator of Fresh Air Sculpture 2022 was so impressed she used Helen’s designs for the event’s promotional material, ‘Helen's contemporary curved steel looked wonderful set against the traditional grounds of Quenington Old Rectory, her flower shapes graced the garden’s borders to create a truly stunning effect.’
Around sixteen Chelsea Design Quarter members will be celebrating the Autumn Design Trail, including Chesney’s, who will exhibit the abstract landscapes of artist Bethany Holmes and Reed Harris who will be featuring the work of mosaic artist Francia Hunt. In addition, George Smith will be collaborating with Susi Bellamy on the ’The Art of Fabric Marbling’. Christopher Farr, Fired Earth, John Cullen will also be taking part.
‘Art Angles’ will run from 1st to 15th November 2023 at Deirdre Dyson London, 554 King’s Road, SW6 2DZ.
