Define Me

About

Define Me

It's time for exposure, time to jump to the arts arena and play the game. Challenge number one: create an identity, create an artist statement.

filmpro lates, Thursday 4 June, 6pm - 8.30pm

"The artist never entirely knows. We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark."
Agnes de Mille

"Only just starting to learn the ropes of the art world, I am still trying to find a place to fit in and most importantly to define myself as an artist. They said it's called an 'artist statement'. Is this about my identity or merely a selling point?

Is my statement the works I create? Is my statement my thoughts? Or is my statement just words?"

The event will present a body of work in film and moving image by Qila Gill. It is a call for interaction with the viewer, an open invitation to discuss the idea of the 'correct' label that can define the individual behind the art work.

Eventually, it will be up to you, the viewer, to decide what Qila's label should say: 'artist' or....? Needless to say, your input will shape her first artist statement.

The event will include live recording of audiences' feedback and thoughts (but you can also use a plain pen and paper). Anything you will say can and will be used by Qila to analyze the process of labelling and hopefully, through this, create a new film.

About Qila

"The things I see are a fraction of my imagination and my reality, just a handful of my thoughts."

Qila graduated with an MA in Film from Middlesex University in 2014. She has screened and exhibited her works internationally. Her current project explores the idea of home and identity.
