Matthew Marks is pleased to announce David Weiss: Metamorphoses, the next exhibition in his gallery at 526 West 22nd Street.
About
The exhibition presents seventeen of the artist’s Metamorphoses drawings made between 1975 and 1978.
Early in his career, David Weiss (1946–2012) explored a range of visual idioms in his drawings with the same playful curiosity that infused his later collaborative work with Peter Fischli.
The Metamorphoses works are drawn in black or blue ink on multiple sheets of standard letter-size paper. Each image organically generates another, resulting in a series of complex visual associations that anticipate Fischli Weiss’ celebrated film The Way Things Go, 1987. Curator Stephan Kunz has written that the drawings “encompass all the experience and richness of an artist who set out to explore the world.”
