About

Marlborough Fine Art is delighted to be holding an exhibition of drawings by David Rayson, The Everyday Fantastic. David Rayson lives and works out of a suburbia that could be anywhere and is everywhere. Washing up, shopping, parking the car, weeding and watching TV are made joyously surreal and become gateways into an alternative world. This is escapism on a day-to-day basis through the event of drawing, which for Rayson has been a very private world for the past four years. These works have amassed to form one hundred coloured ink drawings chronicling Rayson's observations of suburban life, both inside and outside the home. Human's stories are suggested and touched upon in the scenes, but there is no overt narrative, only hints and familiar references for the viewer to interpret. As each new day unfolds the dependency upon familiar rituals are repeatedly played out, their presence felt in every drawing: the TV on, a foaming beer can, cigarette butts, lights being switched on and off, curtains closed and no weather outside, because everyday is fantastic. One hundred drawings will form the publication The Everyday Fantastic. Forty of these hundred drawings will be exhibited. Yesterday evening we did our big shop but tonight I still needed to get out. There must have been a big game on because there weren't any cars driving about, so crossing the road was easy.
