David Atkins
About
n this new body of work David Atkins explores the Tuscan city of Siena, presenting us with a series of paintings full of colour, light and movement. In contrast to his previous sky-dominated Dorset landscapes and London cityscapes, here Atkins lowers his artistic line of vision to expertly depict the hustle and bustle of life at street level. Siena is portrayed as a busy and lively place - people sit on the Cathedral's steps, stand talking in the street and amass in groups in the Piazza del Campo by evening. Atkins reveals an Italian city rife with encounters and spectacle, a place brimming with vitality
This sense of vibrancy in Sienese life is further reflected in Atkins' imaginative utilisation of colour and his familiar Impressionistic style of painting. Through his deployment of warm yellows and bright purples in his evening portrayals of the Piazza, Atkins masterfully suggests the heat emanating from a fire eater or the light emitted by exploding fireworks in the night sky. Even the cool blues and greys of the city's day scenes are imbued with energy through Atkins' loose, layered brushstrokes.
Thus, Atkins has produced a series of works which perfectly capture the rich sense of culture in one of Europe's most beautiful cities.
