The debut NYC performance from electronic-inspired quartet High Risk lead by legendary trumpeter Dave Douglas.
About
Roulette is thrilled to host the debut NYC performance from High Risk, an electronic-inspired quartet lead by trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas. Formed during a chance meeting at a Red Bull Music Academy event, High Risk combines modern jazz and electronic music, incorporating improvisational alchemy and technological exploration to create its unique sound.
On bass and drums, scene leaders Jonathan Maron and Mark Guiliana seek new territory through groove and electronic manipulation. With the addition of producer and beatmaker Shigeto, the group fuses melodic lyricism, textured electronics, deep bass lines and driving drums to create new sonic soundscapes. The group’s 2015 self-titled debut album garnered wide critical acclaim, hailed by Pitchfork as “ simultaneously chill and surprising, it’s the sound of a group discovering a valid language, and then proceeding to push the limits of that new aesthetic.”
Dave Douglas is a prolific trumpeter, composer, educator and entrepreneur from New York City known for the stylistic breadth of his work and a diverse set of ensembles and projects. Since emerging from the downtown scene in the mid-1980s, Douglas has released over 40 recordings as a bandleader. With projects extending from progressive chamber-jazz ensembles to straight-ahead combos, Douglas has always maintained his focus on the interplay between composer, ensemble and improviser.
A prominent figure in the fusion-oriented acid jazz movement of the 1990s, bassist Jonathan Maron first crossed paths with Dave Douglas as a founding member of Groove Collective. Mark Guiliana (with whom Douglas first collaborated on a jointly-led project with saxophonist Donny McCaslin) is an acclaimed drummer who regularly incorporates electronic elements into his work with his bands Beat Music, Heernt and, perhaps most notably, Mehliana, his genre-defying duo project with Brad Mehldau. Michigan-based Zachary Saginaw, who records under his middle name, Shigeto, is a producer and beatmaker who has released three albums for Detroit-based record label Ghostly International.
