dap – to meet, to come together; two separate parts at the point of union.

dap, brings together new paintings on bark, board, glass and larrakitj by renowned Yolŋu, Aboriginal artist, Djirrirra Yukuwa Wunuŋmurra, exploring duality at the heart of her personal and cultural identity.

About

This cross-continental exhibition unites our galleries in Europe and Australia behind the vision of one artist, presenting the many modulations of Wunuŋmurra's sacred and personal designs – the Buyku miny’tji of the Dhalwaŋu clan, and the Yukuwa motif, inspired by her namesake, the yam whose annual reappearance symbolises the revitalisation of the people and their land.

Yolŋu world view is holistic, where every element is connected. Individuals are connected to country, art to ceremony, and dance to song. By looking through both eyes and painting both her clan and personal designs, Djirrirra Wunuŋmurra shows us two stories, where only one was before.
