‘dancing in the womb’ is the long-awaited third solo show from Rezia Wahid MBE, a Bangladeshi-born British textile artist and designer whose work has been exhibited both in the UK and abroad.
About
Her signature works are gossamer-light woven cloths evoking qualities of air, peace, and tranquillity. Her inspirations are diverse, deriving from Islamic spirituality, her Bangladeshi and English backgrounds (William Morris and the Arts & Crafts movement are passionate and ongoing influences), as well as Indonesian ikat and Japanese kasuri techniques—the resulting multicultural dialogue blending into an original voice which is very much Wahid’s own. In 2005, Wahid was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the New Year Honours for her contribution to arts in London.
This exhibition follows a gap of more than a decade during which Wahid has been busy with making a living for her family, motherhood and other creative work, including workshops, teaching, choreography, performances, and curating exhibitions.
‘dancing in the womb’ comprises a series of woven poetic inspirations felt, seen and collected by Wahid during pregnancy and motherhood. A warp which she designed when pregnant with her first child didn’t ever reach the loom, as her other teaching and work projects took precedence. She now has four children and it was the March 2020 lockdown and the home-schooling of her children during that time, together with a modest a-n Bursary, which finally gave her the opportunity to revisit it.
