Katie Hector b.1992, New Jersey, USA, earned a BFA in painting from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2014. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally garnering her recognition in the form of awards and scholarships.
About
Hector’s studio practice revolves around a series of process-based paintings that layer dye and bleach to create intimate, glowing portraits that symbolise loss, grief, intimacy, and longing. Katie’s larger-than-life faces are painted as if the artist knows them well, sometimes she does – often painting her friends and family. But she also draws people that she doesn’t know, working from images from the internet and social media. Her talent for capturing the complexity of human emotion is a technical, problem-solving approach. When she first started using dye, her colour palette was limited to red, yellow and blue. But she worked towards including more acidic greens and blues which brings a whole new environmental angle to her work.
