About

The contemporary quilt and textile art group Curious Threads was established in 2015 by local Sussex artists keen to work with like-minded people and share knowledge and experiences. This second exhibition ‘Moving On’ at Colonnade House builds on the success of the initial exhibition ‘New Beginnings’ held in October 2017, and demonstrates how the individual members have grown and developed their work. Now a cohesive group of friends, they seek to support, inspire and motivate one another to achieve their best work while developing skills and techniques often outside of their comfort zone.

The collective, which is affiliated to the Quilters Guild, has members who come from a variety of different textile backgrounds including embroidery, dressmaking, book making, fabric painting, dyeing and mixed media. They meet monthly, working individually as well as on collaborative challenges and have at least one visit each year to a local place of interest.

This exhibition will include each artist’s interpretation of the various group challenges. It will demonstrate how they have been inspired by the themes and how their work has developed using a mixture of multimedia, paper, contemporary quilting or stitched and embroidered pieces. As experienced textile artists, many exhibit nationally and have recognisable styles and preferred approaches.

Being a part of Curious Threads gives them opportunities to develop these skills further through the experience of fellow members who run mini-workshops as well as in-house tutored workshops where they wish to extend and develop a new skill or style of work. As local Sussex artists they are all keen to display their ongoing journey and hope that you will find this exhibition as exciting as their first where there was a good level of interest and visitor numbers.

The display will include textile and multi-media art pieces, many of which will be available for sale, as well as a range of gifts. Artists will be in attendance each day and available to talk through the work on show. On Friday 18 October they intend to have a ‘Meet the artists’ day with many of the Curious Threads members present, enthusiastic to talk to visitors about their work and explain the context for the range of work on display.
