In contrast to the times of the avant-gardes, artistic claims of innovation today are premised less on the cutting-off of lines of tradition but rather on the rediscovery and reinvention of precursors. 

What is it that prompts artists to increasingly turn towards their role models and how are the corresponding homages, references and quotations revealed in their works? Which continuities, and also breaches, become apparent when it comes to creating a guiding figure?

Based on the eponymous essay “Meine Herkunft habe ich mir selbst ausgedacht” [My Origins? I Made Them Up] by the author, journalist and cultural critic Diedrich Diederichsen, curated by_vienna explores questions like these in its eighth year. The participating galleries conceptualize exhibitions on this theme in cooperation with international curators.

curated by_vienna has been initiated and organized by the Vienna Business Agency with its creative center departure since 2009 to support cooperation between Viennese galleries and international curators.

On the occasion of curated by_vienna, we are offering free guided gallery tours from 10 September through to 15 October.

From 22 to 25 September, curated by_vienna is participating in the international art fairviennacontemporary with a booth and will present a panel discussion with Diedrich Diederichsen as well as the curated by_vienna Night on 23 September.

Symposium
