Artist SHIGETA Yusuke and creative group EUPHRATES have produced works evoking the movement of the region’s mighty samurai warriors and ninjas during Japan’s tumultuous Warring States period.

About

From the mysterious soundscapes of Hokkaido’s indigenous Ainu people to the vibrant history of Okinawa’s ancient Ryukyu Kingdom, diverse cultures can be found throughout Japan. Through CULTURE GATE to JAPAN, artists and creators seek to reinterpret and convey the appeal of these rich cultural resources, each molded by the particular regional climate in which they developed. As the gateways to these unique regions, airports are the ideal location at which to exhibit these works, inviting visitors to discover new aspects of Japanese culture.

Samurai & Ninja

The warriors of Japan’s turbulent Warring States period (late 1400s – late 1500s) provided the MOTION theme for the installations at Chubu Centrair International Airport. Artist SHIGETA Yusuke reimagines traditional folding screens to show samurai engaged in battle through animation in his work, Sekigahara-Sansui-zu-Byobu (Folding Screen of Painted Sekigahara Landscapes). Step outside the airport and you are in Aichi Prefecture, once home to some the most famous samurai who ever lived - people like ODA Nobunaga, TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi and TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. Visit the region’s many old castles – including Nagoya Castle and Hommaru Palace – and learn about one of most epic ever samurai battles at the Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Hall museum opened in 2020.

Creative group EUPHRATES focus on the signs that ninja gave as they engaged in espionage activities for their artwork, A Box of Signs. The Chubu region cities of Iga in Mie Prefecture and neighbouring Koka in Shiga Prefecture are jointly considered the birthplace of ninja’s stealthy skills. Here ninja culture is kept alive in museums, theme parks, temples, and castles that offer insights into ninja secrets and training.

* Please note, the exhibition is currently scheduled to run until 30 September 2021, with the possibility of extension. Please visit the official website for the most up-to-date opening dates and details.
