The wide variety of PATTERNS found on the crafts of the island of Kyushu inspired the art works by artists MIZUE Mirai and MURAYAMA Macoto at Fukuoka Airport.

About

CULTURE GATE to JAPAN is an innovative multimedia art exhibition showing online and on location in Japan at seven airports and Tokyo International Cruise Terminal. Launched by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, 29 creatives were invited to make original, new artworks inspired by the unique cultures and histories of each location, with the goal of communicating the rich diversity of Japan.

Digital Art x Craft

Specially for this show digital artist MURAYAMA Macoto used a 3D modelling tool to create original graphics of chrysanthemum, inspired by the botanical paintings traditionally used to decorate Arita ware porcelain, one of the most esteemed crafts of Kyushu. He also collaborated with Fukusen-gama kiln in Arita to create a contemporary piece of Arita ware for the exhibition at Fukuoka Airport. MURAYAMA’s botanical diagrams are so detailed that they resemble sophisticated architectural drawings.

Over 400 years ago, Arita in Saga Prefecture was the first place in Japan to produce porcelain and to this day it remains a ceramics hub. All of the town's attractions are somehow related to pottery, including kilns, multiple museums, archaeological sites, shops and even the local shrine with its torii gate and guardian dogs made from porcelain. Murayama recommends the Kyushu Ceramic Museum in Arita for masterpieces of ceramics from all over the region, including a historical collection of Arita porcelain.

To discover patterns to use in abstract, animated mandala, animation director MIZUE Mirai toured Kyushu to learn about the traditional crafts of Hakata-ori textiles in Fukuoka Prefecture, Baramon kites in the Goto Islands of Nagasaki Prefecture, Yamaga lanterns in Kumamoto Prefecture, and Satsuma kiriko cut glass in Kagoshima Prefecture.

* Please note, the exhibition is currently scheduled to run until 30 September 2021, with the possibility of extension. Please visit the official website for the most up-to-date opening dates and details
