About
13 The Gallery and the legendary London Latin American Film Festival, in partnership for the first time, are pleased to announce the screening of a selection of Cuban short films, documentaries and features on the 13th of every month (7pm weekdays and 5pm weekends) from June to November, which will see the launch of the 24th London Latin American Film Festival at 13 The Gallery.
The next screening is on the 13th of September and it includes the following two films!
Absence / Ausencia from the 21th LLAFF 2011
Dir. Armando Capo, Cuba, 2011, 10 min, no dialogues
A mother and her son make a living from the sea from their quayside home on Santiago de Cuba Bay. In the course of the film, their very strong and strange relationship is revealed in all its complexity.
The Annunciation / La Anunciación from the 20th LLAFF 2010
Dir. Enrique Pineda Barnet, Cuba, 2009, 97 min, colour
Pineda Barnet is the multiple award winning director of La Bella del Alhambra, (Oscar nominated, and one of the most important Cuban films of recent years). His latest feature, set in Havana , is an overwhelmingly powerful evocation of a Cuban family's tumultuous history, centring around the reading of a will by widowed, spiritualist matriarch Amalia. It is a brilliant and visceral cinematic study of inter-generational turmoil as the family members fall victim to the tyranny of memory, tortured by the turmoil which marked their past lives.
The collaboration between 13 The Gallery and the London Latin American Film Festival, two non-profit organizations, aims to demystify the art space, to challenge preconceptions about what constitutes an art gallery and what characterizes cinema and open art space to all as a warm and welcoming space.
