In this Creative Handstitch Workshop, learn a range of hand stitches and create your own contemporary sampler. This course is suitable for all, whether you’re a beginner looking to learn how to sew, or an improver, looking to try new things in a creative, collaborative atmosphere.

About

Workshop aims and skills/knowledge to be taught

  • To understand how handstitch has been used for artistic embellishment in both a contemporary and historical sense
  • To create a surface/fabric base and apply decorative stitchery
  • The history of handstitch including contemporary and historical embellishment techniques
  • Basic stitching techniques to create a fabric base
  • Techniques in finishing and hanging to final work

Course outline for the day

Morning activity

  • Judith will outline all health and safety information
  • Judith will introduce the workshop by discussing the aims for the day and showing examples of stitching work
  • Demonstration of how to make a fabric base to stitch into, followed by an introduction into creative handstitch and demonstration of different stitches
  • Initial design ideas will be developed

Afternoon activity

  • The group will review knowledge and skills acquired in the morning session
  • The group will finalise their design ideas and begin final piece
  • Judith will advise the group on hanging mechanisms and these will be applied
  • The group will discuss the outcomes of the day and any areas for future development
