Maria uses printmaking techniques of etching and monoprint, also experimenting with new ways of drawing using smoke. Seemingly opposing qualities of strength and fragility, destructiveness and beauty are expressed through a language of expressive markmaking and the processes of etching itself, which is in essence a destructive process. Her work explores narrative and visual storytelling using shared myth and symbolism and draws upon folk and ritual traditions. In particular she looks at stories that are hidden within communities (both contemporary and historical) and connects these with existing narratives such as fairy and folk tales.  Supported by Arts Council Engand
