About

Sunday 6 October 2019, 6-8pm (doors open 5pm)

The celebrated Coull Quartet, who have been on the international stage for several decades, will give a concert in our galleries.  The programme of music reflects the ethos of the Academy as it includes works of sheer beauty alongside those which excite and challenge.

The concert will begin with the first string quartet of Mozart’s much-loved set of six dedicated to Haydn, his Quartet in G K387, a sublime composition, and will finish with Dvorak’s radiant, yet nostalgic, ‘American’ Quartet, one of his most popular works. Between these two quartets, the Coull will play Derek Smith’s Fifth Quartet, a powerful and moving work written in contemplation of human suffering whether at the hand of man or as a result of natural disasters, and a short elegy by Puccini, the supremely beautiful Crisantemi.

Programme:

Mozart String Quartet in G K387

Derek Smith String Quartet No 5

Puccini Crisantemi

Dvorak String Quartet in F Op 96 (‘American’)

About the Musicians

Roger Coull violin

Philip Gallaway violin

Jonathan Barritt viola

Nicholas Roberts cello

Formed in 1974 by students at the Royal Academy of Music under the guidance of renowned string quartet leader Sidney Griller, the Coull Quartet rapidly achieved national recognition and were appointed Quartet-in-Residence by the University of Warwick in 1977, a post which they still hold today. The Quartet, which includes two of its founder members, has performed and broadcast extensively throughout the UK and has made tours of Western Europe, the Americas, Australia, China, India and the Far East. Since the mid-1980s the Coull Quartet has made over 30 recordings featuring a wide selection of the repertoire closest to their hearts, from the complete Mendelssohn and Schubert quartets to 20th century and contemporary British chamber music. Their CD of quartets by Maw and Britten on the Somm label has received universal acclaim; in addition to being featured in ‘Editor’s Choice’ in The Gramophone, it was also described as the ‘Benchmark Recording’ by BBC Music Magazine. The rare combination of maturity and freshness which characterises the Quartet’s performances is often singled out by reviewers:

“Here the playing is so brimful with enthusiasm and commitment, and at the same time so infused with the accumulated wisdom of three decades, that the music simply reinvents itself as it should”. (The Strad)

About Composer and Arranger Derek Smith

Derek Smith was an early member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and studied composition with Malcolm Arnold and conducting with Norman Del Mar. Music was pursued in the background during a scientific career but since his retirement he has had time and energy to further develop his gift for composition and arrangement.

The concert is a fundraising event in aid of the RWA, a registered charity which receives only 1.5% of its income each year in public subsidy.
