In 2016, Batubalani approached six emerging artist who shared a common corpography – the cultural heritage of the Philippines – to reflect upon how their artistic practice echoed the concerns of second generation Philippine diaspora communities in Britain.

About

It is an undisputable fact that we our everyday actions are governed through
our bodily relationship to the world around us. Space - both physical and
cultural – presents many constraints. We use our bodies both to assimilate
and surmount these constraints yet, in the process, space creates marks upon
our own being. Much like a photographic film which is exposed to light, the
body becomes ‘imprinted’ by everyday practices and cultural encounters: we
become physically and metaphorically ‘corpografías’.

Taking up the theme of ‘imprinting’ as a shared notion within these artists’ diverse practices - painting, photography, video art and performance – Batubalani invited the artists to present a selection of their existing projects in an group exhibition. In partnership with the creative production company Neck of the Woods, Batubalani further invited the artists to develop new works around the theme of ‘corpografia’ by running a series of public creative workshops in the format of an ‘open studio’. With the aim of promoting the visual arts as career amongst the Philippine community in London, Batubalani will collaborate with the charity Philippine Generations and the Philippine Embassy to invite Philippine youth to attend the artist-led creative workshops.
