About

Conversation with Lines: A Solo Exhibition by Nic Gear

3rd—10th June

Opening Night: Friday 2nd June, 18:00-21:00

This June, Surface welcomes back Nic Gear, winner of last year's open, Abstract, and his solo exhibition, Conversations with Lines.

Conversations with Lines explores the relationship between landscape and art, and considers the way we experience and mark those landscapes in which we live, work, and walk. The artwork on display has a direct relationship with the steps taken by Gear in the “edgeland” landscapes of Nottinghamshire, and also refers further afield to the Peak District and Lake District national parks. Using material discovered in the places explored, Gear collates photographic records of walks undertaken, makes handmade oak gall ink, and creates found object collections. These techniques have an intentional quality and explore how past and present generations converse back and forth through our landscapes. Gear’s physical experience of walking and the spiritual essence of place are also interwoven within the work. Threads become suggestions, traces of place, expressing the unseen and our collective impact on earth.

Opening Night

Friday 2nd June, 6-9pm
Surface welcomes The Artefact, two spell-binding guitarists in dialogue, and the creation of the ambient soundscape for scintillating Conversations with Lines.

Artist Talk

Saturday 3rd June, 12pm and 2pm

Gear will talk about his diverse body of work, which includes photography, sculpture, drawing, and mixed media pieces. He will discuss issues around a culture of walking and how this affects his practice. Navigating his way through the exhibition, Gear will provide a unique insight into the process of creating the work, and the way his art is metaphorically framed.
