The show aims to explore current ideas and approaches around this medium by talented local and international artists. These artists represent a wide variety of techniques and inspirations, but they all engage with painting’s traditions, reinterpreting them and adapting them to their own style. The original works presented range from engaging portraits and vivid landscapes to intriguing abstract pieces.
One of the artists inviting us to discover her works is Astrid Baenziger. The Swiss artist creates dynamic artworks where we can find the perfect balance between figuration and abstraction. The combination results in dramatic vivid pieces, ready to bring out an array of emotions in the viewer. Exploring femininity, Guilherme Pontes deconstructs what it is to be a woman today, offering a view of the varied aspects or characteristics that this entails. Through the nature of the individual he represents women beyond traditional conceptions and reveals complex, delicate figures that navigate the space between intimidation and seduction. Each artist draws inspiration from different sources and focuses on a variety of themes but they all share the appropriation and reinterpretation of the painting medium in contemporary art.
You are warmly welcome to join us for a drink with the artists at the opening night of CONTEMPORARY PAINTING at The Brick Lane Gallery open from 6pm-8.30pm on Wednesday 3rd August 2016.
