The Contemporary British Painting Prize 2018

The Contemporary British Painting Prize exhibition opens at The Menier Gallery, London, 7–16 February 2019.

The twelve shortlisted artists for the exhibition are:

Keith Ashcroft, Lucy Austin, Benjamin Deakin, Kate Dunn, Jenny Eden, Andrew Ekins, Pippa Gatty, Alison Goodyear, Roland Hicks, Rachel Lancaster, Joe Packer, Jonathan West

The winner of the Contemporary British Painting Prize 2018 prize is Sussex-based artist Joe Packer. He receives £2,000 in prize money, a critical essay by Matthew Collings, and membership of Contemporary British Painting.

The prize judges for 2018 were: Matthew Collings (painter, critic and broadcaster), Amisha Karia (Head of Collection, Paintings in Hospitals) and Grant Scanlan (Huddersfield Museums Manager). 

The twelve shortlisted artists were selected by a group of practising painters: Simon Carter, Paula MacArthur, Ruth Philoand Narbi Price(winner of the Contemporary British Painting Prize 2017).

The Contemporary British Painting Prize was launched in 2016. In its first year the prize was won by Cathy Lomax, in 2017 Narbi Price was the winner.

CONTEMPORARY BRITISH PAINTING

Contemporary British Painting is an artist-led organisation that explores and promotes current trends in British painting through group exhibitions, talks, publications and the donation of paintings to art museums.  It was founded in 2013 by two Essex based painters, Robert Priseman and Simon Carter, and currently consists of 65 members.

HUDDERSFIELD ART GALLERY

The permanent collection is primarily of British art from the 19th-century to the present, with some earlier works of 18th-century watercolours and drawings, Japanese prints and local views. The collection includes a significant number of works by members of the Camden Town Group and paintings by British artists including Francis Bacon, LS Lowry, Frank Auerbach, Trevor Bell, Terry Frost, David Bomberg, Roger Hilton and Ivon Hitchens.

The Menier Gallery is located in Central London within the historic Menier Chocolate Factory, just minutes from the Shard, Borough Market and Tate Modern. The gallery’s ever-changing exhibition programme features contemporary artists, designers, curators and communities from around the world.

The Menier Gallery is part of national charity Paintings in Hospitals. All funds raised by the gallery support Paintings in Hospitals' mission to inspire better health and wellbeing for patients and carers through art and creativity.
