About

The first UK exhibition of new and recent contemporary art from Iraq since the first Gulf War, Contemporary Art Iraq displays a diversity of creative practice that is often overshadowed by media-prominent themes of political instability and conflict. The exhibition explores and challenges expectations of Iraq today and showcases a new generation of exciting artists deserving of critical acclaim and international recognition. Providing a snapshot of the current Iraqi art scene, Contemporary Art Iraq, curated by Cornerhouse in collaboration with ArtRole, features 19 Iraq-based artists working across a wide range of media. Works presented deal with very individual searches for identity, addressing traditions and beliefs that shed light on the fascinating state of Iraq now. Compelling installation pieces and captivating photography and performance documentation will fascinate people with an interest in the region and international contemporary art practice. Co-curated by Cornerhouse and ArtRole. Supported by British Institute for the Study of Iraq (BISI), Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW), and City Inn, Manchester.
