Constant’s New Garden

F.A.F presents ‘Constant’s New Garden’: a series of interconnected micro-climates, composed of crops, vegetables and plants.

The garden is elevated by and housed within a scaffold structure. Discarded materials from the art world, namely shipping crates and perspex vitrines, have been used to create the plant beds.

Utilising the differing levels the beds are arranged in accordance to each crop’s light preferences. The different levels provided by the structure also facilitate an integrated watering and drainage system.

In some areas UV lights and skylights have been incorporated within the structure to give further accessibility to light in lower areas; the skylights doubling up as green house roofing. The design of the plant beds are modular allowing sections to be interchanged when needed.

Constant’s New Garden looks to explore the potential for interplay between urban farming, urban design and public art. Whilst looking into how environmental concerns could shape future growth of crops, Constant’s New Garden seeks to consider the beneficial elements of community growing and the social cohesion that could be developed in similar set ups.
