Conspiracy Dwellings: A Portrait of a Model City

About

Conspiracy Dwellings uses a dossier from the State Archives of the German Democratic Republic (DDR) to identify, visualise and map the 500 Stasi conspiracy dwellings that were active in Erfurt, a former East German city between 1980-1989. The last decade of the regime was a period of intense surveillance by the Ministry of State Security, (Stasi) when it had c. 100,000 full time employees and 200,000 informants.

The exhibition addresses some of the issues associated with state control, surveillance, past and present at a time of uncertainty when global terrorism highlights its controversial status. Pam Skelton is a London based artist and Senior Lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

The exhibition is sponsored by AHRC, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London, ICFAR, Kulturstiftung des Bund and ACE.
