About

3rd Sept to 9th Sept FIRST THURSDAY Sept. 6th 6-9pm Gallery Two Connie Viney Connie Viney is known for her outlandish and larger than life sculptures and installations made from cake and icing. Observing the nation's obsession with the confectionary industry, Connie recently created an entire room intricately carved out of sugar-paste. With an overwhelming visual aesthetic, and an invitation to eat the displays, her intention was to entice the viewer to move deeper inside for a closer look. ‘I wanted to see how long this sense of intrigue would last before the sickly sweet smell of icing evoked a feeling of claustrophobia and a need for a hasty retreat,' she states. In her upcoming exhibition, Connie plans to build on this previous work by creating a sugar installation that incorporates movement, light and sound. She says ‘the work aims to evoke a reaction. I'm interested to see whether people are fascinated, intrigued or simply repulsed by this sensory overload'. In this exhibition, she asks, ‘are candy stores a bit harmless fun, or a depressing sign of the times?' By capturing these competing themes and ambiguities, Connie challenges our assumptions about the confectionary industry in the 21st century.
