Conference: The Museum After the Revolution

As part of The Future Remains: Revisiting Revolution, Calvert 22 Foundation and the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, are pleased to present this two-day conference dedicated to museums and their collections in partnership with the European University at St Petersburg, UCL SSEES , The Vladimir Potanin Foundation, and Rich Mix.

The Winter Palace, the Hermitage Museum’s current home, was at the centre of events in St Petersburg, 1917. The subsequent seismic political shifts saw the Hermitage transformed from imperial to state property. Its collections were deeply affected by Soviet government policy and new models of museology that would be developed over the following seventy years.

How do museums that were once part of the Soviet bloc reflect on this history today? In particular, how do they deal with the gaps, violent ruptures and contradictions that characterised the 20th century? What specific problems – and also potential strengths – can be identified as a result of these histories? 

We will address the impact of the Revolution on museums, taking the Hermitage as its starting point, with a particular focus on modern and contemporary collections.

To accompany The Museum After the Revolution, an exhibition of archival images from the State Hermitage Museum will be on display at Calvert 22 Space from Friday 28 – Sunday 30 April, 12pm – 6pm. More information can be found here.

Booking terms & conditions

A deposit of £5 will be taken in lieu of a ticket, which will be fully refunded when you attend the event or send someone else in your place. Not attending the event and not sending anyone else in your place will mean you lose your deposit. 

Please allow up to 7 business days for your refund to be processed and show up on your account. If it's past that time, do get in touch with us so we can look into it.

We have a 12-hour cancellation policy, meaning you can cancel your ticket up to 12 hours before the event start time by emailing rsvp@calvert22.org and the deposit will be refunded to your account. For any cancellations made outside this time frame the deposit becomes non-refundable.
