Concrete Skin

About

This autumn BHVU Gallery presents Concrete Skin, an exhibition exploring domestic dynamics and ways in which our behaviour within the home is motivated by social expectations. Concrete Skin brings together four internationally recognised artists whose selected works explore the intimate and emotional experiences that we often struggle to put into words. Paintings from Marcelle Hanselaar's most recent series, Biting the Bullet and Mama Mama the Bear is Loose, present the viewer with a rejuvenated look at expressionism and demonstrate her importance as a leading contemporary figurative artist. Two new photographic pieces from the ongoing series Plucked by Norwegian artist Geir Moseid, speak of the calm and beautiful surface of scenes from the everyday, whilst on closer inspection suggest subtler and more sinister meanings. Andrew Litten's paintings hold a similar duality as he confronts the pains and pleasures of relationship needs through powerful and haunting figurative works. Providing a visual contrast to the highly coloured works of the other artists, Ala d'Amico presents black and white photographic works to explore the same thematic of the domestic realm -- she conjures confined spaces and seemingly abstract objects to signify at once real and inexplicable emotions.
