In 2008 13 artists and film-makers working in the North were commissioned to create a series of short video works on HD. Welcoming contributions from all creative disciplines, the Composure project encouraged a focus on considered shot composition, moving the emphasis of creating new work away from a growing reliance on post-production techniques. In order to achieve this, each artist was restricted to a single, locked-off shot, with a running time of between 2 and 3 minutes. Sound and Image were shot simultaneously with no post editing. The diverse responses exploit the superb detail of high definition video and explore the tension between the still photograph and the moving image. The works also display a surprising range of approaches, from darkly humorous to serenely contemplative.
