For his first solo show ‘Compilations 09-16’ at Proof London, Lucas Dupuy has used the digital/analogue process for this series of print based paintings.
Over the past 7 years Dupuy has shot and collected traditional 35mm film photography of his travels and surroundings. Alongside this he has developed his practice from his formative years using windows paint and early versions of Photoshop as an extension.
From the viewpoint of a painter these new compositions arise out of compiling these techniques and processes. Using Photoshop as the medium he has been creating compositions with 35mm photographs and working on top of them with various tools in the program. The placement of photographs transferred onto canvas gives the work the ability to allow the observer to question the images, composition and the content behind them.
Combining the effects of photography and line is a means to try and challenge the popular conception of painting. They appear as paintings, but they reveal something different to what a painting portrays. This idea allows the rules to be broken in order to achieve uncertainty
