Our annual Community Takeover exhibition celebrates and showcases the community engagement projects that have taken place over the past year.

About

‘Journeys’ reflects on the past year’s activities, the projects we have undertaken, people we have met and experiences we have shared. Everyone is welcome to come along to the exhibition, find out more about how we engage with the communities around us and get involved in a creative activity or workshop.

In summer 2021 artists Hannah Chater and Daniel Locke ran a series of creative workshops with residents who live near the Edward Street Quarter development to create a community portrait of the neighbourhood. The work produced was then shared with artist Bruce Williams and inspired his new public artwork for the Edward Street Quarter. This exhibition includes participant’s drawings of stars and constellations, a neighbourhood star map and examples of Bruce’s design work.

On display for the first time is artwork produced by members of The Art Club, a year-long creative programme in collaboration with the Probation Service and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Artists Daniel Locke and Jenny Staff have worked with members of The Art Club to create a library of bookworks made during the course of the project. Visitors can enjoy spending time with these books and experience the artistic journey that has been shared by everyone involved in the project.

Leap Then Look have been running weekly sessions at Phoenix Art Space with young people who attend the Extra Time Project at the Russell Martin Foundation since January 2022. Using their innovative and unconventional approach to engaging with contemporary art practice, Leap Then Look have offered the young people new ways of thinking about what art can be and how it can be experienced. For ‘Journeys’ Leap Then Look have recreated some of the workshop activities and all visitors are invited to come and try them out.

Come along and get creative with our gallery based activities including drawing to music, designing your own star and hand dancing, or take part in one of our artist-led workshops with Daniel Locke, Hannah Chater, Jenny Staff and Leap Then Look (details below).
