Common Disquiet is an exhibition of ceramic sculptures by Cristina Cerulli and Fernanda Cortes, bringing together work loaded with personal and geopolitical narratives that share a common feeling of disquiet or unease.

About

Cristina Cerulli’s intricate work is a response to the tangled times we live in – Brexit, the refugee crisis, the murder of George Floyd, the storming of the Capitol, the return of the Taliban, and now the invasion of Ukraine. Her sculptures represent a series of personal and intimate reflections on our position and the challenges of collective action.

Fernanda Cortes’ anthropomorphic figures are born from an urge to create when confronted with the dark side of human nature. The works explore the ‘dehumanisation’ of society and embody human behaviours that seem cruel or inhumane. Each sculpture is accompanied by a short story that activates the form or adds narrative context.

Yorkshire Artspace’s Ceramic Starter Studio is a two-year programme supporting early-career ceramicists with subsidised studio space, access to kiln facilities, and practical support from mentors and technicians.
