About
Revolutions and Reactions – Modern Art from WWII to the present:
Session 2 - Existentialism and European Art post-war, post-holocaust
The second in a series of four lectures examines European art in the aftermath of the devastation of WWII and the holocaust. The impact of the war and existentialist ideas are related to the varieties of art produced in the 1940s and 1950s in France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Britain. We examine Socialist Realism, Miserablism, Art Brut, Art Informel and existentialist inspired figurative art. We note important similarities and differences between European and American art in this period.
