About

Revolutions and Reactions – Modern Art from WWII to the present:

Session 1 - The rise of Abstract Expressionism in the USA and the Cold War

The first in a series of four lectures examines the evolution of Abstract Expressionism, tracing the various artistic, intellectual and political influences that affected its development and reception during WWII, such as US Regionalism, Mexican Muralists, Cubism and Surrealism, and the influence of ideas derived from psychoanalysis and existentialism. The reception and promotion of Abstract Expressionism as the preeminent American art movement is examined in the context of Cold War politics.
