About

This December, Spacex will host Cold Comfort, a week long series of immersive installations and exciting events in the lead up to the festive period. The gallery will become a hive of creative production with an array of activities to cater for all interests and age groups. The perfect escape from the bustle of the high street. Visitors are invited to dress up and pose for a seasonal portrait against a picturesque mountain backdrop or create new work to celebrate the wonder of snow and contribute to an installation of all things white. Relax in the cosy zone with hot chocolate and winter crafts. Collect specially commissioned cards to guide you through the Cold Comfort programme. Spacex's regular Art Club and Outer Space will run as usual with the return of the ever popular Take Over Tuesday. A late night film screening will take place of the Hammer Horror, The Abominable Snowman. Double Elephant Print Workshop will run a print making workshop, inspired by traditional Scandinavian patterns. A daytime art swap, an evening crafty social and an adventure story telling session around the gallery, amongst other events, are open to all to come and enjoy as part of this special winter experience. Saturday 11 December, 10am—12pm Art Club Ages 8—11, £5/£3, booking essential You are invited to Art Club's special winter event. Build an illuminated white landscape under an aurora borealis sky and enjoy festive treats. New members welcome. Sunday 12 December, 2—4pm Winter Tales Family activity, free, booking essential Join David Heathfield for a family activity of adventure storytelling around the gallery. Explore the spaces, interact with the stories and create your own ending to the afternoon. Monday 13 December, 7—9pm Crafty Social Ages 16+, £5, includes materials, mulled wine and mince pies, booking essential Join us in the cosy zone for a relaxed evening making seasonal gifts as featured in the retro craft magazine Golden Hands. Workshop led by artist Maddy Pethick. Tuesday 14 December, 10am—12pm Take Over Tuesday Ages 0—7, free, booking essential An opportunity for young children and their families to come and play at Spacex. Help to create a snowy scene, dress up for winter and take your photo, then snuggle up with some cookies and warm drinks and listen to a story. Wednesday 15 December, 5.30—7.30pm Outer Space Ages 12—15, £5, booking essential Join in the celebration of all things wintery with an evening of activities. Participants will build an instant light art installation and hand made slides for projection. New members welcome. Thursday 16 December, 6—9pm Printmaking Workshop Ages 16+, £10, includes materials, booking essential Experiment with coloured inks and a printing press to produce monoprints and collagraphs for festive gifts, inspired by Scandinavian patterns. Friday 17 December, 7pm (91 mins) Feature Film Screening PG, free, booking essential An opportunity to see The Abominable Snowman, 1957. The film follows the exploits of an English anthropologist on an expedition as he searches the Himalayas for the legendary Yeti. Saturday 18 December, 2—4pm Art Exchange Free, booking essential Do you have any unwanted art lying around? Find it a new home at the Spacex art exchange and pick yourself up a gift in the process! Arrive with your artworks at 2pm for a 3pm swap.
