About

Simon Carter, the 6th President of the Colchester Art Society, writes, ‘Colchester Art Society's annual exhibitions have always been at the centre of Society life. This year's Winter Exhibition is particularly significant as we come home to the reopened Minories. We have missed the Minories and look forward to a renewed partnership and a bright future with our long time friends.’

The Colchester Art Society first exhibited at the Minories in 1956. CAS is one of the largest art societies in the country with 375 members and includes some of the most interesting East Anglian artists working today. The members all enjoy exhibiting their work on the walls of one of the best galleries in the region with its wonderful cafe and pretty garden.

Not only are exhibitions for their current members held annually but also sponsored exhibitions have been held at the Minories by past distinguished artist members such as Cedric Morris and Peter Coker. As well as exhibitions, CAS also arranges lectures, the latest being about the first president and distinguished artist John Nash by the author and curator Andy Friend.

Emma Howe, Director of the Minories said ‘Since the Minories re-opened in August, and indeed since we first existed as a gallery, the Colchester Art Society has been one of our strongest supporters. We are delighted to be able to welcome them back to take over our whole building with their rich and varied artworks this winter, and I look forward to seeing how our relationship evolves in the future.’

About the Minories:

The Minories is Colchester’s Oldest Art Gallery, first established in 1956. It reopened in August 2023 after a three-year period of closure, and has received over 5,000 visitors since opening. The much-loved Minories café has recently reopened and is now being run by a community cooperative of local chefs called Common Ground Colchester.
