A two-person show presents the abstract and figurative monotypes of London-based artists Clive Jackson and Sonia Martin.

About

The medium of monotype it is a spontaneous process which brings together painting, drawing and print in one work. A method favoured by many, including Rembrandt, Degas and Picasso, the prints have their own particular quality where certain types of marks and imagery can only be achieved using the monotype process.

CLIVE JACKSON
Clive Jackson’s studio is in Bermondsey where he creates abstract drawings, collage, small constructions, paintings and prints. He was introduced to monotypes while studying BA Fine Art at Birmingham Polytechnic in the Eighties.

He says of monotypes “As you’re working in reverse and not working directly onto the surface as in painting, the brush marks, scratches and thickness of paint all play a part in the effect of the finished piece. I enjoy seeing the print for the first time, like reading or seeing something new.” For him the appeal lies in the individuality of each print and that none are ever exactly the same.

Clive has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions including Mappin Art Gallery, Young Unknowns, Battersea Contemporary Art Fair, Art at the Bridge #8Tower Bridge, African Art Expo, Seven and Seven Part 2.

SONIA MARTIN
Sonia Martin expresses a female perspective to her subject-matter which encompasses themes of memory, mortality and the search for freedom. Her figurative images, simultaneously bold and tender, reveal a range of feeling that is both engaging and readily accessible. Her art deals with human subjects and explores their relationships to each other and the landscapes that surround them.

Recent exhibitions include the Royal Academy, the London Art Biennale and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers at the Bankside Gallery. Sonia has been awarded several international artist residencies and In 2021 she was a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Award (New York) for printmaking.

Her work is held in collections in the UK and abroad.
