Goucher College presents Clean All the Stolpersteine, a solo exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Leah Clare Michaels, on view February 13 through May 30, 2025.
Michaels’ ongoing project centers on the Stolpersteine—small brass memorials embedded in the streets of Europe to mark the last residences of Holocaust victims. Initiated by German artist Gunter Demnig, the Stolpersteine project now spans more than 100,000 stones across the continent. In a ritual of quiet care, Michaels kneels to clean these markers, transforming acts of maintenance into gestures of mourning, responsibility, and public remembrance.
The exhibition features framed wash clothes used during performances and three video screens documenting actions in Warsaw, Greece, and Italy. These materials extend the ephemeral nature of the performances, inviting viewers into the artist’s sustained engagement with memory, ancestry, and historical trauma.
Drawing from her Roman Catholic, Polish, German, and Italian heritage, Michaels’ broader practice explores ritual, grief, and the politics of public space. Clean All the Stolpersteine reflects on the quiet, persistent labor required to keep histories visible in the public realm.
