This exhibition explores the absurdities and distorted normality of everyday life in Venezuela through paintings and ceramics inspired by Aboriginal aesthetics and cultural mechanisms.

Aboriginal cultures originally populated Venezuela; however, their communities and artistic values have always been under-appreciated and misrepresented. Andrea’s latest project draws inspiration from careful research of Aboriginal art to recontextualize the issues surrounding people in contemporary Venezuela. The exhibition opens a dialogue between Aboriginal aesthetics, often misunderstood as antiquated, and current events in the contemporary political climate. The works address everything from Toilet Paper becoming treasure to Chávez, the dead ex-president of Venezuela becoming a divine figure trough propaganda.

Aboriginal ceramics are the richest pre-Columbian art form in Venezuela, in terms of the quantities that have been found and their high levels of preservation. Andrea’s work continually utilizes motifs and representations of Venezuelan animals. In this project however, she looks for additional inspiration in Aboriginal representations of gods in order to translate it into her own visual language. For example, by establishing a link with the deified figure of Hugo Chavez.
Another project featured is Andrea's latest collaboration with RMF Studio. Their collection of designer wallpapers contrasts the formality of architecture with the charming irregularities of handmade drawings and objects.

Andrea is a London-based Venezuelan artist who likes to talk about her culture and her journey of connecting with her identity through hand-crafted ceramics, drawings, and textiles.
