About

This forthcoming exhibition of paintings by Claude Temin-Vergez will be her first in London for over five years. The work is a kaleidoscope of fluid lines and twisting shapes; a dense network of skeins of flat colour painted layer upon layer in fragmented patches, pulled taut over the surface. Issues of tension and surface, gesture and scale drive the paintings. And they are full of contradictions: sitting between hard-edge abstraction and something more flamboyant and ornamental — her busy compositions are a slower version of the expressive gesture of, for example, Pollock's line; the colours are artificial colours - man-made colours, not natural - but are not jarring; and the paintings are complex and simple, and subtle and arresting. They are a sensation of movement, of light and space, as tactile rococo forms lock together in playful dynamic shapes. Colour and form become one and the same.
