About

Fondation CAB is pleased to welcome conceptual artist Claude Rutault (b. 1941, Trois-Moutiers, France). In 1973 he made the radical decision to paint his paintings the same color as the wall on which they are hung. The painting became inseparable from its carrying wall, and therefore ceased to be a sacred object, since it acquires to be adapted to the places and circumstances of its display. Claude Rutault has, in his seemingly simple though thorough work, provoked a paradigm shift with regards to the methodology of the creation process, and of the relationships the work implies in its interaction with the art scene. By doing so, he proposes a new politics of painting.
