I’ve always loved painting cityscapes. In contrast to natural landscapes, cities offer the opportunity to experiment with bright primary colours, strong lines and different perspectives.

I’m particularly inspired by the impact night and day can have on a city. At night, the subtleties of a building’s facade disappear, and viewers have to work harder to use lights, shadows and reflections to imagine what they can no longer see.

In some cities, such as New York, the opposite is true; bold and fluorescent colours are turned up to max and offer a striking impression of artificial light on a huge scale.
