The debut solo show by Christopher Stead that explore the polarities of high and low culture in England today.

About

The show explores the polarities of high and low culture in England today. Informed by increasing social inequality, this work probes and pokes fun at cultural hegemony by stealing aesthetics and materials quarantined as low.

The long-term association of bright colour with popular culture and the decorative is exploited through material transgression. The emblematic motif of fluorescent, posits this colour as a symbol of the working class. The fetishized use of utilitarian materials and subversive vernacular dissolves the hierarchies of the commodity object, placing aesthetic value over material value.

Christopher lived as a graffiti artist for 20 years, painting trains all around Europe. In 2016 he graduated with a First Class BA Hons in Fine Art at the City and Guilds of London Art School. His work has been exhibited in London, Amsterdam, Berlin and Helsinki. Upcoming exhibitions include a solo show at China Heights Gallery in Sydney, Australia.
