Curated by Cecília Fortes, Chromatic Vigor: Affirmation brings together works from six emerging Brazilian artists (Rafael Alonso, Tainan Cabral, Maria Lynch, Sophia Loeb, Mano Penalva and Jeane Terra) that delve into colour as a way to transcend the hostile environment that surrounds them.
About
With different approaches, these artists address issues related to freedom, safety, strength, beauty, pleasure, humour, identity and hope. Their works all aim to dive into alternative, imaginary spaces, in which colours emanate energy and open up the possibility of facing one’s current challenges with renewed strength and positivity.
Rafael Alonso investigates the possible articulations between the day-to-day experience and painting. He experiments with fields of action for colour, form and gesture, whilst retaining the critical nature of painting to reflect on time and place. Tainan Cabral's paintings reflect the popular culture of the west side of Rio de Janeiro, taking shape in an oneiric world that escapes the daily chaos and urban conflicts of an area dominated by drug trafficking. Sophia Loeb’s artistic language takes inspiration from nature and mimics its forms, returning the warmth and joy of being immersed in it. Maria Lynch’s canvases, filled with uplifting colours that erupt from underneath a sober black surface, present fictions that let her break away from the limitations of preset ideas imposed by society. Mano Penalva, inspired by the organised chaos and exuberance of his native region, presents new aesthetic arrangements of everyday objects that invite the viewer to merge with them. Jeane Terra’s self portraits deal with the subjectivity of memory and depict ephemeral beings with fragmented figures, consisting of a mix of influences collected along the way and seized in a unique and individual manner.
