About
Christopher Russell has regularly reinvented his practice to avoid easy categorization. He made his mark in Los Angeles with irreverent installations of altered photographs paired with transgressive, fictional texts, sharing the chaotic aesthetic of his notorious 'zine Bedwetter. As Russell traveled the country, eventually settling in Portland, his work became slower, combining laborious scratching of the print surface with other layers of material experimentation. Russell’s debut exhibition at Upfor highlights four projects developed during this nomadic period with a special presentation of images from his 1996 body of work, Landscape, hidden camera images of strangers meeting for sex in the bushes of a San Francisco park.
