About
The word "obloquy” was borrowed into English in the 15th century from Latin. Obloquy refers to strong public criticism or verbal abuse and conveys the idea of harsh condemnation and disgrace, often in a public context. The deep emotional wounds inflicted by societal shame affects and alters personal identity.
Throughout history, shame has been a tool of social control, from ancient rituals designed to enforce conformity, to modern examples of public shaming, resulting in stigmatisation and the marginalisation of those who deviate from accepted standards. Meanwhile, in private, shame can be internalised, leading to self-loathing and a distorted sense of self-worth. Each artist delves into the complex interplay between personal shame and societal judgment, and the path between burden and liberation, presenting bold and unconventional perspectives on what it means to confront and reclaim shame.
