Christian Marclay. Shake Rattle and Roll
10 Oct 2015 – 23 Mar 2016
In Christian Marclay’s artistic practice, sound is a key element, and his concern with that medium forms the basis for the complex œuvre he has produced over the past thirty years.
About
His videos, installations and performances reflect his investigations of the relationship between music and the visual arts. Among the early influences on his stylistic development were Fluxus and Punk “do-it-yourself” strategies. For the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the American-Swiss artist, musician and pioneer of Turntablism is developing an exhibition that will explore one of the world’s most extensive Fluxus collections, the Sohm Archive. His video installation Shake Rattle and Roll (Fluxmix) of 2004 will form the core of the show. In that work, Marclay playfully investigates the acoustic potentials of Fluxus multiples and, with affectionate disrespect, activates them ‒ for the most part acoustically ‒ above and beyond their original intentions and instructions for action. The installation culminates in a cacophony as fulminant as it is tongue-in-cheek in its institutional critique.
