About
The interactive installations of the exhibition tell the story of almost 30 years of artistic creation by the Austrian-French artist duo Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau.
Since the early 1990s, Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau have been developing complex interactive installations at the interface of reality and virtuality, natural science, technology and art, which explore the possibilities of artificial life. In their works, they simulate evolutionary growth processes triggered by direct interaction with the audience. Works such as »Interactive Plant Growing« (1992) or »Portrait on the Fly« (2016), which are in the collection of the ZKM | Karlsruhe, create seemingly living systems in which touching real plants or moving in front of a screen creates transformations in digital space. The exhibition »The Artwork As a Living System«, which provides an overview of the complete work of the Austrian-French artist duo from almost 30 years with 14 media installations, is a coproduction of ZKM with LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón, Spain und OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH. The exhibition will be accompanied by a scholarly publication in the Leonardo book series in collaboration with MIT Press.
