Children in Movement is a collection of youth migration stories spanning almost 80 years, starting with a young Czechoslovakian girl’s journey on the Kindertransport in 1939. Every story across each subsequent decade echoes its themes of separation and community, identity and difference, loss and hope, as young lives have threaded their way from all corners of the globe to make their home in Birmingham, and to make Birmingham today’s most ethnically diverse city in the UK.
This intimate mosaic of personal accounts and photographic portraits fills the void in which prejudice and distorted narratives about immigration thrive. It gives the reader the opportunity to hear above the clamouring headlines the voices of people who, for a whole variety of reasons and from very different backgrounds, have made Birmingham their home.
