About
Chiara Dellerba: What Do We Know and What Do We Believe?
21st – 28th March 2015
Opening Night: 20th March 6-8pm
Surface Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Chiara Dellerba. The exhibition is concerned with habitual ways of seeing: with what we know (the experience of reality through our senses, specifically sight) and by what we believe (experience mediated through preconception).
The artist offers a personal meditation on how the world works. The exhibition will encourage the audience to investigate the gap between knowing and believing, and to develop a different way of experiencing reality that can lead to a new kind of belief. The works on display can be seen as an exercise in seeing and knowing that aims to stimulate our capacity to create our reality and share our experiences with others.
Dellerba will share ideas, pictures, gestures, signs, materials, and memories, inviting the audience into her personal reality, and encouraging them to engage with the show as active participants in the creation of alternative ways of seeing and knowing.
The drawing exercises are comprised of minimal signs and gesture that playfully explore the more complex nature of components that make up a “picture”. Like memories, the artist believes that a drawing is made up of visual fragments and signposts mapped out by the body. This installation will feature an intuitive use of medium and colour.
The opening night will feature tap dancing from Jess Murray, a leading artist in the UK's rhythm tap community. Jess's inspiration comes from “Hoofing”, which places musicality, improvisation, and self-expression at the heart of the tap dancers craft. Dellerba's show will launch in conjunction with Peter Day’s solo exhibition, Pictures of My Father, which will take place in the main gallery.
Dellerba will also have a closing event, with a Rhythm Speak performance by Untold Rhythm. The event will take place on Saturday the 28th of March between 5 and 7pm. There will be a donation bar for both opening and closing events, with ales provided by local brewer, Springhead.
Workshops
Chiara Dellerba will hold workshops in drawing, printing, and bookbinding. The workshops are part of the Creative Fringe Festival. Details about how to get involved will be on our website.
Saturday 28th March, 11.00am to 5pm
