About
The exhibition "Cheng Chung-chuan: Quiet Times" at Powen Gallery showcases Cheng Chung-chuan's iconic works from 2002 to 2018.
Born in 1931, Cheng’s creations combine abstraction and figuration. The water-like lines are her signature. The brushstrokes move forward with the current thinking of the creation, using the flow of pigments and dot brushwork to stack textures and brushstrokes.
Japanese art had a huge influence on Cheng's creation. Cheng left Taiwan in 1957 and lived in Japan afterward. For more than 30 years, the artist had cut off contact with Taiwan. At that time, she was in her young and middle-aged years. She completely absorbed local knowledge in art, especially avant-garde art expressions from the West, and then developed and grew together with Japanese post-war art.
In the history of Taiwanese art, Cheng's position is very important and clear. She shows how women can break through various restrictions through painting in a conservative age. Her paintings develop a style between abstraction and figuration, and the strong and profound emotions in her heart are the basis for her persistent creation for decades.
